File sharing programs cause data leaks, security headaches

It probably comes as no surprise to most security specialists that 84 percent of the 308 senior IT professionals in a recent Harris Poll survey said that unmanaged file sharing programs like Dropbox posed a security challenge for their organizations.

Almost half, or 46 percent, say what are referred to as fremium apps leak data, though 46 percent between the ages of 18-44 gave the thumbs up for file sharing for their personal medical records.

It seems, though, that trust is a generational thing — the report, sponsored by Intralinks, shows only 14 percent of those 45 and older expressed the same level of trust for file sharing programs. Similarly, the responses varied based on position.

Only 25 percent of respondents below the vice president level trust consumer file sharing services while 48 percent with the title of vice president or above trust those services.
