A former web developer with a Winchester-based company pleaded guilty to a federal computer crime on Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia.
Christopher Wood, 41, pleaded guilty to one count of intentionally accessing and exceeding authorized access to a computer, a release said. He faces up to one year in federal prison and a fine of up to $100,000, and he also agreed to pay $61,710 in restitution to the victim company.
According to the release, Wood was laid off from the victim company in early 2014. His credentials were deactivated, so using another employee's credentials he remotely accessed the company's computer system from his home computer and then deleted files and disabled accounts.
“[Wood] admitted that he deleted files and disabled accounts because he was upset about losing his job,” the release said.
