Germany clamps down on hackers

German authorities are stepping up the hunt for computer hackers.

The news comes as police arrested several people on Thursday, seizing 38 terabytes of data on more than 200 PCs for analysis.

German authorities used the CeBIT Computer Fair, which opened in Hannover last week, to announce a major crackdown on what it calls homeland hackers.

The German Federation Against Software Theft (GVU) said that
around 800 homes, offices and universities were raided in cities including Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich.

The raids were part of a two year investigation, which resulted in at least 19 servers being shut down for holding vast quantities of pirated software.

One group operating in the Ruhr district had been supplying dealers with software on CDs and DVDs.
