Google will no longer offer Chrome support for Windows XP, Vista and several older versions of Mac OS X, the company announced, along with releasing several Chrome and Chrome OS updates.
Marc Pawliger, Google's director of engineering and early notifier, said in a blog post on Nov. 10 that support for Chrome on XP, Vista and OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 will end next year. This confirmed a report Google put out earlier this year that it would be leaving these operating systems behind.
“Today, we're announcing the end of Chrome's support for Windows XP, as well as Windows Vista, and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8, since these platforms are no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple. Starting April 2016, Chrome will continue to function on these platforms but will no longer receive updates and security fixes,” Pawlinger said in a blog post, adding that “older platforms are missing critical security updates and have a greater potential to be infected by viruses and malware.”
The company also announced several updates.
For Chrome 46.0.2490.86 for Windows, Mac and Linux Google has offered an updated for Adobe Flash Player (19.0.0.245) and other security fixes. The company is restricting access to bug details unitl most users have added the fix, Google said.
In addition, for Chrome OS the Stable Channel has been updated to 46.0.2490.82 and also includes a Flash Player (19.0.0.245-r1) update and security patches.
