Gov’t snooping drives companies away from cloud adoption, study finds

Organizations are less likely to adopt the cloud due to fears of government surveillance, according to a survey conducted at RSA Conference 2014.

Of the nearly 280 IT security professionals who participated in Lieberman Software's “2014 Cloud Security Survey,” 80 percent indicated that they would rather house their company's sensitive data within their own network, rather than the cloud.

When asked why, 33 percent revealed that the possibility of government snooping was what drives them away from cloud adoption. Additionally, 75 percent of respondents shared that cloud applications were a hindrance for IT departments.

However, when compared to the same survey conducted in November 2012, 86 percent preferred to keep sensitive data within the company network, and 48 percent cited a fear of government surveillance as a reason for not adopting the cloud, indicating a slight increase of trust in the cloud.
