Kentucky becomes 47th state to pass data breach notification laws

Gov. Steve Beshear signed a bill on Thursday that means data breaches can no longer go unreported in Kentucky.

The breach notification aspect is similar to other state laws, but the bill was also drafted to help protect student data in the cloud, according to The National Law Review. This means groups are prohibited from using data on pupils, kindergarten to grade 12, for marketing or other purposes.

The signing of the bill, which comes on the heels of an uptick in large scale data breaches, makes Kentucky the 47th state to pass data breach notification legislation.

Alabama, South Dakota and New Mexico are still without any breach notification laws, but the ball is rolling in New Mexico after a bill was introduced at the end of March.
