MessageLabs analyst: Put pressure on ISPs to stop malware

Businesses should put the onus on internet service providers (ISPs) to filter web traffic for increasing volumes of malware, according to Mark Sunner, chief security analyst at MessageLabs.

Speaking at the release of MessageLabs’ latest report, Sunner said that ISPs are not taking responsibility for increasing numbers of malware reaching end users, but are in the perfect position to combat attacks.

"ISPs are under increasing pressure to do more," he said. "The high volume of malicious online traffic shows the internet firms see this as the endpoint’s problem. As a result, we are seeing the wider adoption of managed services. But, people need to start questioning where filtering should take place and put more pressure on the ISPs to take action."

However, he believes ISPs are beginning to take notice.

"Some ISPs are starting to do more to help tackle the problem. Users will vote with their feet, and drop and appoint different suppliers as they wish," he said. "Internet firms are now looking to differentiate themselves and beginning to adopt the cleaner lines concept."
