Microsoft ends support for old Internet Explorer versions Jan. 12

Microsoft is ending support for older versions Internet Explorer (IE) starting January 12.

The move is part of Microsoft's larger plan to remove support for older software systems, it ended support for most Windows XP systems last year, in order to boosts its products security and reliability and encourage customers to upgrade. Internet Explorer routinely receives dozens of patches when Microsoft issues its monthly updates, which will happen tomorrow.

With a few exceptions, IE 11 running on systems using Windows 10, 8.1 and 7 will continue to receive security updates. This means people running an older version of Internet Explorer on any of these operating systems will have to upgrade to IE 11, an act the company is encouraging.

Microsoft will continue to support earlier IE versions for select operating systems. IE 9 running on Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 IA6 will continue to be supported.
