Microsoft hides chequered past with new patchwork

Microsoft’s will roll out ten of its monthly patches tomorrow (Tuesday) with one of them rated as “critical.”

The critical patch is part of seven Windows-related updates, with another "important" patch for Exchange and "moderate" patches for UNIX and Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server and Small Business Server.

Tuesday provides the date for the complete rollout of Microsoft's new patching program, its key change being a centralized service. The one-stop-shop approach, first reported by SC in March, will work on Exchange 2003, MSDE 2000, Office 2003, Office XP, SQL Server 2000, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP.

In the same month SC reported Microsoft is tackling long-held security concerns about Windows Server 2003 with its first major update for the operating system. The Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 includes a firewall and security configuration wizard, a tool businesses can use to configure network security settings.
