Microsoft to release new Antigen email security software next month

Microsoft announced today that the first products developed as a result of the 2005 acquisition of Sybari Software will be released July 1.

The Redmond, Wash., software company said it will release Antigen for Exchange, Antigen for SMTP Gateways, Antigen Spam Manager and Antigen Enterprise Manger next month.

The antigen email engines will use multiple scan engines to protect corporate email systems. In addition to scanners from AhnLab, Authentium, CA, Kaspersky, MailFilters.com and Norman Data Defense Systems, Sophos and VirusBuster, the Antigen products will include Microsoft’s anti-virus engine.

"Customers are faced with the challenge of providing the best possible protection for their email users and maintaining the availability, uptime and performance of this mission-critical application," said Ted Kummert, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Security, Access and Solutions Division. "Antigen’s unique multiengine solution integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Exchange Server to provide customers with the benefits of layered protection, while minimizing cost, complexity and impact on performance."

Microsoft dove into the consumer security solution market last week with the release of Live OneCare.

The solution is billed as an all-in-one security blanket for PCs, which includes anti-virus and anti-spyware protection, a two-way firewall, automatic updates, computer maintenance functions and file backup and recovery capabilities.

The service costs $49.95 for an annual subscription.

Microsoft's rivals did not sit idly last week. Symantec announced that its own new integrated security solution - formerly known as Genesis - will be named Norton 360.

McAfee also said that its new subscription service, which has been codenamed "Falcon," will be released this summer.
