Minerva Tantoco brings tech solutions to NYC

As New York City brands itself as a tech hub, one woman has spearheaded the city's advancements in her role as the first CTO.

Minerva Tantoco noted during a conversation at a New York City law firm on Monday that she functions at the intersection of government and technology, and believes it can help solve many of the city's issues.

One such issue she mentioned was a now-expired phone booth contract. Instead of renewing the terms, she and the city decided to turn all phone booths into Wi-Fi hotspots with tablets stationed inside to make a free national phone call.

“I'm forward thinking, so I advise folks in the day-to-day and how to get ahead of fix,” Tantoco explained.

With the inherent lack of security in Wi-Fi internet access, Tantoco said she wants mandatory encryption for the world's “fast and largest” Wi-Fi network.
