NEC develops next-gen 3D facial recognition technology

NEC has developed a three-dimensional facial recognitionalgorithm that it says can be used in automated applications.

The algorithm uses what are known as Geodesic Illumination Basis (GIB) descriptors, which allow a 3D facial image to be plotted by relatively small amounts of data.

Because the system uses 3D images, NEC claims its technology is up to 24 times more accurate than 2D images as the basis for scanning.

Demonstrating the technology at the CeBIT show in Hannover, Germany, yesterday, NEC said that it expects the first products using
the system to be unveiled later this year.
