New Mexico State Rep. Bill Rehm, R-Bernalillo has doubled down on efforts to get a Data Breach Notification Act through the New Mexico legislature and on the books, leaving Alabama and South Dakota as the only two states without a data breach law requiring businesses in the state to notify customers when data is stolen.
Following the spurning of a similar bill last year, Rehm has introduced compromise legislation that would impose penalties on businesses that don't heed its requirements.
The State Attorney General would oversee the process and enforce the law, which has drawn the support of the likes of the Credit Union Association of New Mexico, according to a blog post on Albuquerque Business First.
The New Mexico bill has been resurrected at the same time as Congress is mulling national data breach notification legislation at the White House's behest.
