Oracle: Java on Windows XP will still get security updates

Users still running Microsoft's no-longer-supported software Windows XP, can still look forward to updates for Java.

Last Friday, Oracle, the maker of the popular Java plug-in, put an end to murmurs that the software would no longer work on XP, or receive compatible security fixes.

In a blog post, Henrik Stahl, Oracle's vice president of Java product management, said that all versions of Java, supported prior to the XP end-of-life announcement, will continue to work on the operating system “for the foreseeable future.” Oracle will also continue to push Java patches to XP desktops, he added.

Stahl explained that Oracle's earlier announcement, that it wouldn't provide “official support” for Java on XP, implied that, if an issue was specific to Windows XP, Oracle would not be required – or, in some cases, able – to rectify the concern with a patch.
