Personal details of 40,000 employees of Cox Communications, an ISP and cable provider, have shown up for sale on the dark web, according to Motherboard.
The data – which includes email and physical addresses and work details dating back to 2007 – is available on The Real Deal Market, an online marketplace that specializes in siphoned data.
A Cox Communications spokesperson told Motherboard that it hired a third-party forensic team to investigate.
"Many will remember that last November, Cox Communications was fined $595,000 by the FCC for failing to report a data breach involving customer data the previous year," Adam Levin, chairman and founder of IDT911, and author of Swiped, told SCMagazine.com in an email on Thursday. "While the company has moved more swiftly to address the current situation than it did in 2014, clearly Cox has more work to do with its privacy and data security protocols."
