Philippine branch of Anonymous hacks Chinese govt sites

Close to 200 Chinese government websites have been defaced by a Philippine branch of the hacktivist collective Anonymous.

The group took to its Facebook page on Sunday to share links to each of the sites hacked. Based on the context of the message used on the defaced sites, as well as recent events regarding territorial tensions between Beijing and Manila over the South China Sea, the hacktivists are not pleased with China's actions.

“China's alleged claim on maritime territories and oppressive poaching can no longer be tolerated,” the message reads.

According to The Washington Post, authorities in the Philippines argue that the standoff between Chinese and Philippine naval vessels has been provoked by the poaching of endangered species by the Chinese in areas of the South China Sea not far from its coast.
