Phishing campaign steals bitcoins from Mt. Gox victims

As if losing money in the Mt. Gox collapse wasn't bad enough, now many of those victims are falling prey once again, this time to phishing scammers, according to Cyren researchers who have observed spam messages emanating from the Kraken exchange.

Kraken  is leading the charge in paying Bitcoins recovered from the Mt. Gox debacle to its former patrons, according to a report by The Guardian. Users are redirected to a Google Docs page where they can supposedly check the status of their claims but instead receive W32/Trojan5.NRB, a Windows Trojan that seeks out Bitcoin wallets and steals their content.

In April 2014, a Japanese bankruptcy court determined that it would be difficult for Mt. Gox to rehabilitate itself after the loss of hundreds of thousands of Bitcoins worth up to $500 million. The company had filed for Chapter 15 bankruptcy in February in Tokyo, as well as in the U.S. in March. It began liquidating its assets after the April court ruling.
