Ransom notes reportedly spotted on MedStar computers

As MedStar Health said today it is still in the process of recovering from a cyberattack that took place two days ago, published reports said hospital staffers observed a ransom note appearing on some company computers.

The organization has still refused to categorize the type of attack it endured, but workers told the Washinton Post they observed on computers a ransom request that demanded a 10 Bitcoin payment. This news coincides with the conclusion drawn by infosec executives who believe MedStar has been victimized by ransomware.

MedStar, which operates 10 hospitals and other outpatient centers in the Maryland-Washington, D.C. area, said its three main clinical information systems are being restored. In addition, the systems that allow patients to make medical appointments are also being brought back to full operating condition. The healthcare provider said many people could not make appointments in the hours following the attack.

MedStar has not returned an SCMagazine.com request for confirmation of the ransom note.
