The Dothan City, Ala., school board on Monday allocated $25,000 to purchase cyber liability insurance to cover the board in case a cyberattacker gains access to district information.
Dothan City School Superintendent Chuck Ledbetter said the need for insurance reflected the growing threat hacking poses to personal data, to the Dothan Eagle, adding this move will help cover the school board of liability in case of an attack.
“We have great security, but I'm sure Target thought they had great security before they were hacked into,” Ledbetter said.
School districts and universities are no strangers to cyberattacks with the Commack, N.Y., and Charlotte-Mecklenburg, N.C., schools both reporting incidents in the last week.
