SnoopSnitch Android app notifies users of IMSI catchers, SS7 attacks

Germany-based Security Research Labs (SRLabs) has released a free app – named SnoopSnitch – that can alert of attempts to spy on mobile phones.

“SnoopSnitch collects and analyzes mobile radio data to make you aware of your mobile network security and to warn you about threats like fake base stations (IMSI catchers), user tracking, and SS7 attacks,” according to the app's description on Google Play.

SnoopSnitch requires a rooted device with a Qualcomm chipset that runs stock Android 4.1 or higher, the description said, adding the app improves by using data contributed from other users. Confirmation is required before uploading data to SRLabs servers, and uploads are encrypted.

The app comes shortly after researchers reportedly identified vulnerabilities in Signaling System 7 (SS7), which make it possible for anyone to listen in on cell phone calls, read text messages, and locate callers.
