South Korea blames North Korea for breach that compromised 10M users

South Korean authorities are blaming their northern neighbors for hacking the website of an e-commerce firm and compromising the data of more than 10 million users.

On July 11, Interpark, a Seoul-based website, learned that an APT attack in May allowed attackers to steal personal data including names, email addresses, telephone numbers and other information, the agency said in a statement according to the Washington Times.

“The hackers first gained access to an employee's computer, and identified email patterns that were familiar to the employee before sending an email that contained the malware [and] opening a back door, which is why the employee was fooled,” an Interpark spokesperson told the Korea Herald.

South Korea's National Police Agency claimed North Korea's General Bureau of Reconnaissance breached the firm's servers after an investigation revealed an IP address and specific language used by the hackers that both pointed to North Korea.
