Spam soars to more than two-thirds of total traffic

The level of unsolicited email on the internet continues to rise and topped more than two-thirds of the total internet traffic last month.

The United States continues to attract the bulk of all spam, but several other countries, especially those where English is the main language of electornic communication, have also seen a rise in spam levels.

The figures come from MessageLabs, a provider of email secuirty services, which more than 840 million messages for 8,400 customers around the world.

The company said that 83 per cent of traffic sent to the U.S. was spam. In the United Kingdom, the level was 52 per cent; in Germany 41 per cent; in Australia 32 per cent; in Holland 30 per cent; and in Hong Kong 27 per cent.
