States probe eBay after breach affects all its users

Connecticut, Illinois and Florida have launched a joint investigation of eBay's security practices, following a major breach that impacted all of the company's users, The Guardian reported.

On Wednesday, eBay started asking its users to change their passwords after attackers compromised employee credentials and gained unauthorized access to a database storing personal information. The database contained names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, email addresses and encrypted passwords of individuals.

Just a day after eBay's announcement, Illinois, Connecticut and Florida said they were looking into the incident, the Thursday article in The Guardian said. In addition, New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman requested that the e-commerce company provide free credit monitoring for those impacted.

In April, Connecticut and Illinois, along with other states, also launched a probe of Experian, after a data breach hitting its subsidiary, Court Ventures, exposed over 200 million consumer records.
