Computer users are again being advised to watch out for misleading URLs after researchers uncovered a new cybersquatting scheme making use of an old trick: capturing users who click on a link with a com[dot]com extension that leads to fake websites, according to a blog post from Malwarebytes.
The firm's researchers said a new iteration of the technique uses the URL dw[DOT]com[DOT]com. While that site is no longer available, they were able to visit a fake news piece disguising itself as a report in the Daily Mail offering readers the opportunity to purchase an iPhone 6 for £1.
"All links on the fake Daily Mail article point to one URL, which then leads users to random destinations where they are offered freebies behind surveys or certain services," the post stated.
The site also delivered adware, PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) and spyware.
