Thousands impacted so far in Splash Car Wash payment card breach

On Thursday, three days after technology writer Brian Krebs reported that Splash Car Wash may have experienced a payment card breach, the Connecticut-based automobile cleaning company announced that its payment card systems were compromised by malware.

So far about 1,400 patrons have been impacted by the breach, which occurred between Feb. 28 and May 16, according to a notification posted by Mark Curtis, CEO of Splash Car Wash. According to an NBC report, payment card information on as many as 30,000 people may have been compromised.

The malware has been eliminated and Splash Car Wash is working with law enforcement as part of an ongoing federal investigation, according to the notification, which adds that new, secure payment card systems have been brought into all 16 locations.
