Thousands of mobile devices left behind in taxis

Thousands of mobile phones, PDAs, laptops, and Pocket PCs are inadvertently left behind in the back of taxis, according to a survey of 900 taxi drivers around the world.

In the last six months, a major cab company in Chicago reported the highest rate of losses of PDAs/Pocket PCs per taxi of all firms surveyed, with 0.86 per cab, and the second highest losses in mobile phones (3.42 per cab) and laptops (0.18).

That means about 85,619 mobile phones, 21,460 PDAs/Pocket PCs, and 4,442 laptops were left in the company's cabs over six months, according to Pointsec Mobile Technologies, which sponsored the study.

The survey highlights the need to ensure data on mobile devices is secure thorugh access control and encryption, said executives at Pointsec, which provides mobile data security.

The survey was conducted in Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, and the U.S.
