U.K. National Crime Agency arrests 56 alleged cybercriminals in week-long operation

British law enforcement arrested 56 people, including a man accused of hacking the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), this past week in operations targeting alleged cybercrime perpetrators.

The 20 separate operations took place across the U.K. by officers from various agencies, according to a National Crime Agency (NCA) release. The 23-year-old arrested for allegedly hacking the DoD is said to have broken into the agency's network to steal data used as part of an international satellite message dissemination system. The system is used to communicate with employees via email or phone around the world.

Approximately 800 people had their contact information compromised in the attack, along with information on 34,400 devices.

The NCA wrote that this and other incidents are “why we're working tirelessly with our partners across the UK and internationally as part of an intensive week of action targeting cyber criminals.”
