Various internet initiatives look to increase privacy protection legislation

Multiple companies, groups and legislators are examining internet privacy policies this week and coming together to pressure the U.S. government to reexamine its practices, especially with regard to the National Security Agency (NSA).

Microsoft, for instance, initiated the “Do One Thing” movement that it hopes will encourage internet users to be aware of safer online practices, such as using secure wireless networks and securing their devices with a PIN or password.

Also today, Reddit and Mozilla, among others, will display banner ads and invite users to call their legislators in demand of better online privacy legislation. “The Day We Fight Back” participants want Congress to pass the USA Freedom Act, which would curtail NSA surveillance and increase transparency in the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

Google wrote in a blog today that it supports the act, as well, and would like to additionally see updates to the Electronic Communications Privacy Act.
