Less than a week after the White House indicated it would not retaliate against China for a pair of hacks at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the Obama administration is now plotting how to taken action, according to a report in The New York Times.
The scope of the attacks apparently persuaded the administration to act though the Times reported that officials are struggling to select a response that is both adequate and won't intensify the situation. While officials haven't decided on the appropriate tactic or timing of any retaliatory action, the report also said that President Obama has pressed staff for “more creative” responses.
The first OPM breach affected 4.2 million current and former federal government employees while the second affected 21.5 million, compromising background forms, Social Security Numbers and even fingerprints.
