White House to hold cybersecurity summit, Apple’s Cook to speak

Apple CEO Tim Cook will speak at the White House cybersecurity summit on Friday at Stanford University.

The Hill reports that tech executives, academics and government officials will convene at the summit, where the White House will unveil its next executive action. Attendees will discuss how the government can better work with the private sector on cybersecurity initiatives.

Cook's participation in the summit comes amid controversy surrounding Apple's default encryption on iOS 8. Government organizations, and in particular, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have warned of possible negative repercussions from the encryption move.

In an October speech, FBI Director James Comey said that although law enforcement might be able to access information through the cloud, not all users will opt into cloud backup, especially savvier “bad guys.”
