Yahoo, Symantec team up on web security

Yahoo and Symantec are expanding on a previous partnership to offer new security services to Yahoo customers.

The latest collaboration, called Norton Internet Security provided by Yahoo, offers Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Personal Firewall for use to Yahoo users. The product launched today.

The companies are offering a 30-day free trial of the product, with an option to purchase a year's subscription for $49.99 at the end of the free period.

The new product will include, spyware, virus and adware detecting and blocking, software for blocking identity thieves and intruders and email and instant messaging scanning.

Rowan Trollope, vice president of consumer products and solutions for Symantec, said that Yahoo's consumer base is another avenue for making public internet use safer.

"Our data shows that 30 to 40 percent of consumer systems aren't being protected and getting online security to all consumers around the world is incumbent upon us," he said. "Going through the internet service providers is one more channel."

Yahoo and Symantec previously offered Norton Spyware scan for Yahoo Toolbar, Symantec Yahoo Toolbar and Norton Anti-Virus Scan for Yahoo Mail and HotJobs as joint ventures.

Nicole Leverich, Yahoo spokeswoman, said today that Yahoo has partnered with Symantec for five years in order to provide safer web services for customers.

"What we announced today is that we're making available Norton Internet Security available to the millions of our Yahoo users around the world, which will enable them to do all of the things they love doing safely on the internet," she said. "We're always talking to our customers about everything that we do. And one thing our customers consistently tell us is that they want to feel safe online, and they don't want a hassle while they're doing it. If we can provide them with safety, it's a win-win for everyone."
