Intel, Discovery Education kick off digital safety program for kids

A new educational program, launched Thursday by Intel Security and Discovery Education, will help instill cybersecurity awareness among elementary school children.

The three-year national initiative, called the “Intel Security Digital Safety Program,” encourages teachers and parents to enter a sweepstakes through March 2015, in order to win grant funding for the elementary school of their choosing. The prize levels include a $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 grant.

The program will provide educators which resources for children aged 8 through 11 so they can inform them of good cybersecurity habits, like keeping PII private online, using strong passwords and dealing with cyberbullies, a release said. Students will receive a cybersecurity certificate upon program completion.

In its second year, the initiative will also reach children aged 11 through 14. The following year, the program will expand to support schools in the UK and Ireland.
