The Online Trust Alliance (OTA) has suggested that the Internet of Things (IoT) security is flawed. The IoT Trust Framework was released earlier this week, presenting guidelines for IoT manufacturers, developers and retailers to follow when designing, creating and marketing connected devices.
The task force of industry leaders including Microsoft, Symantec, Verisign, ADT and TRUSTe, came to the conclusion that the safety and reliability of any IoT device, app or service depends on security, privacy and sustainability. Sustainability—critical to the security, privacy and personal safety of users—is often overlooked.
Without addressing sustainability, devices that may have been secure off the shelf will become more prone to hacking over time. This would allow hackers to remotely control these devices. This concern was first demonstrated with baby monitors, and recently by infiltration of fitness wearables to spy on health vitals.
Darin Welfare, VP EMEA at Winmagic states, “These vulnerabilities will be of particular concern for businesses in the coming years as more and more devices are connected to the corporate network, presenting hackers with additional attack vectors to target organisations. In addition to being hugely inconvenient for the individual, a hack targeting devices connected to a company network could have catastrophic consequences.”
