ISIS warns members of fake Android apps aimed at spying on terrorist group

ISIS may see itself as tech-savvy, but an unknown party has released fake Android apps that the terrorist group fears may be used to spy on them.

According to a report at Android Authority, an alert appeared June 1 on social media warning members to beware of a phony Amaq Agency Android app making the rounds.

“Warning: Dubious sources published a fake version of the Amaq Agency Android app, aimed at breaching security and spying,” the notice reportedly read. “We advise to avoid downloading any app, except via the official Amaq channels and recommend to verify with the officially published checksums before installation.”

That fake apps are cropping up and sources are trying to disrupt ISIS through technology comes as no surprise. In April reports surfaced that American forces are implanting viruses and malware into computes used by specific ISIS members to pull out intelligence data on the organization's hierarchy leading to several being targeted and killed.
