IT jobs volume hits peak despite slow start in 2016

Despite a slow start at the beginning of 2016, the IT jobs market in London experienced an upturn in the number of jobs with June being the highest month so far for job volume in 2016.

According to Morgan McKinley, the job volume continued to peak after the Brexit vote, which appears to not have had immediate effects on client hiring in the technology space. The general consensus is that it is too early to see or predict what the mid and long-term impacts will be on the IT market place in London and the UK, following the Brexit vote.

Financial services was the quietest sector in quarter one and for the start of Q2, but contributed greatly to peak levels of roles in June. The Retail Banking sector has been busy during this period, and skills in demand across all of Financial Services have been in cyber-security and solution architecture.

The commerce and industry sectors remained steady throughout the year in terms of job volumes with no peaks in the number of roles coming through.

The public sector has continued to be busy with high role volumes from different government bodies in the London area. The digital space has featured heavily with roles in UX, digital business analysts and project managers. A large digital programme is running across the government and expects more hiring in this area during Q3.

“The swift replacement of David Cameron and new appointments in the Cabinet, without the need for a long drawn out Tory leadership battle, is likely to be seen as a positive factor by our clients. Hopefully we will experience increased levels of confidence that the Brexit process can be managed effectively, which in turn will help to reduce any negative impact from the volatility on the job market in London and the UK in general,” said Angela Lewis, team leader, IT, Morgan McKinley.
