A new Washington state law set to go into effect July 1 will allow banks to recoup certain data breach losses from negligent businesses. Under the new law, passed by the state Legislature in late March, financial institutions can seek reimbursement from large retailers and credit card processors that have suffered a data breach — if they failed to comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
