We could have guessed this was going to happen after picking up scents a couple of weeks ago in a forum for Bed, Bath & Beyond, one of the store's for which Certegy provides check-verification services.
Since our story hit, we have received a number of emails from consumers claiming to have been victims of not just annoying direct marketing offers...but also fraud. Certegy denies this.
We were unable to reach a spokesperson today.
The lawsuit contends that "Certegy and FIS failed to implement and maintain adequate security measures to protect consumers' confidential financial and personal information. Their failure to properly monitor and supervise their employee subjected consumers to risk of data theft and other fraudulent actions."
