Weaknesses: Does not address DRM throughout the enterprise.
Verdict: Excellent product within its genre (web).
SummaryLizard Protector Web Content Security may at first sound like a web content manager, but it is far from that. This product is designed for the ever-developing world of e-commerce. Protector keeps web-based content safe and secure from misuse or piracy by giving administrators the ability to perform several operations, including: block viewing; copying; sharing; modifying; saving; screen grabbing; printing (including how many times); and printing to file, PDF or image printers.
This tool is simple and intuitive to use. The application installs in just seconds, and once the product is registered it is ready to go. The administration application is more like a small, tab-topped configuration box. This simplistic approach provides for effortless administration and management. Protecting files is as simple as adding them into the application, assigning rights, and publishing the policy.
This product provides a very different type of DRM, and can be setup to be hosted by LockLizard or hosted by the customer servers. We find Protector to perform quite nicely at protecting web content - such as ebooks, elearning and online training courses - content published to an intranet or extranet, web portals or websites, or web-based content published on CD/DVD. This product also goes a step further and protects the underlying code as well.
Documentation for this offering consists of a quick-start guide and an administration guide. The quick-start guide provides a brief overview of the product and using the administration application, while the administration guide provides an in-depth look into using the product to achieve maximum content protection. Both guides provide screen shots and configuration instructions in a well-organized manner.
LockLizard provides 30 days of email-based support with the purchase of the tool. Support for the rest of the year is available for $1,495 and includes free product upgrades. There is also limited phone support available and a knowledge base on the website.
With a price of about $7,000 for a perpetual license and $1,500 per year for ongoing support, we find this product to be a good value for the money. Protector provides solid protection for web-based content with an easy to administer backend.
