SummaryWeb filtering, malware protection and forensic capability. Wait, forensic capability? 8e6 Professional Edition is a high performance, scalable, appliance-based internet security suite, integrating best-in-class URL filtering, application control, detailed forensic reporting and real-time monitoring and mitigation of web-based threats. This system goes well beyond the traditional definition of web monitoring and control. With this product, administrators can drill down deep into logs and reports to find detailed forensic information using the Enterprise Reporter.
However, all this functionality comes with a price. The price in this case is not only monetary, but also in ease of use. This product is fairly easy to use once we got it set up, but deployment is not straightforward. The product is deployed using a network tap or switch span port for monitoring. We found adjusting our infrastructure to accommodate this device was a bit tricky, but once we had everything setup this product is quite simple to use and manage. Management is done using a Java-based web console. This console is well organized and intuitive to navigate with straightforward tree style navigation.
This tool is high performance with the large enterprise in mind. It is designed to handle the massive amount of web traffic in larger environments, and to make it easy for administrators to pinpoint where and how violations occur. The 8e6 Professional Edition is designed to help enforce compliance laws, such as CIPA, HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley, by offering a wide range of flexibility and granularity.
Documentation for this product is in the form of paper quick-start guides for both the R3000 and the Threat Analysis Reporter, and then PDF manuals for each on provided CDs.
Marshal8e6 offers support included in the purchase price of the product. This support includes phone and email technical support available on a 24/7 basis for any fatal system down issues, and from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT for general support issues.
At a price starting at about $29 per user plus hardware, this product may seem quite pricey. However, we find that it does offer a whole lot more than just web filtering and control. This is a product for the high-end enterprise where security and accountability is an absolute must.
