The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) intensified its efforts to push global governments to take down direct download and streaming cyberlockers used by content pirates, arguing in a letter to the United States Trade Representative (USTR) that the sites serve up malware along with pirated intellectual property.
Contending that malware “is increasingly becoming a source of revenue for pirate sites,” the MPAA said they meet the USTR's criteria for being included on its Notorious Markets List.
The MPAA named VK.com, Uploaded.net, Rapidgator.net, Firedrive.com and Nowvideo.sx as the top illicit cyberlockers. Kickass.to, The Pirate Bay, Torrentz.eu, Rutracker.org and Yts.re were also fingered by the lobbying group as the top illicit peer-to-peer sites.
Putting the sites on the Notorious Markets List could increase the likelihood that governments will take action against them.
