MXI Stealth MXP
Strengths: Convenient for end-users to have an "all in one" device.
Weaknesses: Installation can be confusing, but the quick start guide helps.
Verdict: A unique offering with storage and authentication in one neat package. We rate this product Recommended.
MXI Stealth MXP is a unique offering which offers the option of a USB-based token that includes a fingerprint biometric scanner used for both secure remote access, as well as secure storage. Like other offerings, this product included server software (ACCESS Enterprise). The server software is based on two components: a server and a configuration component. The application also works in a standalone mode when the software client is installed on the desktop. Even with the available biometric scanner, we don’t rate this in the same class as other pure biometric devices. That is because it is part of a system that includes biometric authentication to the token and password authentication to it.
This mode is used for secure storage and also for authentication of the USB device. Devices range in size. We tested a one gigabyte device, but devices of up to 60 gigabytes are available. The USB device we tested had a public partition, which is set to read-only permissions, and the read/write partition requires authentication to the client first. In our configuration, a digital certificate file was stored in the read/write partition and the device protected this sensitive information. The client configuration can be combined with one-time passwords to provide three-factor authentication.
The installation of the Stealth MXP was a bit trickier than other products. It can be installed on Server 2000 or 2003 and also on several workstations. The integration into Citrix authentication was easy and required no additional knowledge other than some familiarity.
Documentation for this product is provided, and the Quick Install guide was the only documentation which was needed for our testing. Other documentation is included electronically in the form of PDF files. The documentation is easy to follow and the layout is logical.
Phone, email and the web portal are the primary mechanisms for contacting MXI. MXI Security provides basic technical support.
The pricing for the Stealth MXP was at the upper range of the price spectrum, starting at $152 for single units of the 512 MB version of the USB device. These devices also include USB flash drives, in addition to two- or three-factor authentication. This allows secure storage of data on the USB drive, plus the additional security of multi-factor authentication.
Stealth MXP has been rated Recommended.
