Navy interns launch CTF competition

The U.S. Navy has launched a Capture the Flag (CTF) competition to secure the networks used by the Department of Navy (DoN) and improve the overall cybersecurity posture of the military branch.

The event was organized and developed by two interns of the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP), Daniel Jermyn and Trevor Phillips. The students created a competitive scenario in an offline network as part of their NREIP internship, a Department of Navy program that places students into navy environments to establish naval research projects.

The program created a cyber lab through funding from the Naval Innovative Science and Engineering.

Earlier this year, a commander of the Naval Surface Warfare Center said the Navy is exploring a system that would allow the navy to selectively connect or disconnect its surface, air and submarine assets from the internet. The announcement came after University of Lancaster researchers found that U.K. navy maritime systems were
susceptible to cyberattacks.
