Nearly 50k patient credit cards compromised by insider

As many as 46,000 patients of Arizona-based Scottsdale Dermatology may have had personal information compromised, but two suspects – one of them an employee of the medical practice's billing firm – have been arrested.

How many victims? 46,000 patients are at risk. Four victims have been identified so far, although one suspect admitted to using 13 credit cards that were not her own.

What type of personal information? Credit card details was among the data stolen.

What happened? Brittney Davidson, 24, is an employee of All Source Medical Management, which does billing for Scottsdale Dermatology. She was arrested along with her boyfriend, 25-year-old Winfred Dick, for stealing and using patient credit cards.

What was the response? Scottsdale Dermatology and All Source Medical Management have not issued comments, but the two alleged criminals were busted after Davidson paid for a traffic violation using stolen information belonging to a Maricopa County sheriff's captain. Detectives received a search warrant on the home where both suspects live and found evidence linking the two to the credit card stealing operation, as well as methamphetamine.

Details: Davidson and Dick were arrested and booked on multiple counts of aggravated identity theft, computer tampering, fraudulent use of a credit card and fraud schemes. Davidson later admitted to the crimes. Dick is being held on a $5,000 bond and Davidson is being held on a $3,500 bond.

Quote: “I'll give [the] kudos to my wife,” the Maricopa County sheriff's captain said. “She called me that morning, actually asked if I got a speeding ticket in the city of Glendale. When I assured her I had not, that's when I started digging and looking into it.”
