Almost 2,000 Vodafoners open to fraud after details stolen

Telecoms provider Vodafone has reported that nearly 2,000 of its customers have had their details accessed. According to Vodafone, the incident happened between Wednesday and Thursday last week.

Reportedly, 1,827 customers have had their accounts accessed, with criminals potentially accessing customers' names, their mobile phone numbers, bank sort codes and the last four digits of their bank account numbers. The BBC reported that the details criminals used to try and access Vodafone accounts were allegedly bought on the ‘dark web'.

Despite this, the company has insisted its systems had not been hacked. Vodafone said it had carried out mitigating actions so only a handful of customers had been subject to any suspicious activity.

Vodafone explained that the details available could not be used to access customers' bank accounts, but the information does mean customers could be subject to fraud or phishing attempts.

The incident comes close after TalkTalk, another telecoms provider, was subject to a cyber-attack in which personal and banking details were reportedly accessed by hackers. Two arrests have been made in connection with the attack.

A Vodafone spokesman said the affected Vodafone accounts had been blocked and their banks notified.

The National Crime Agency, the Information Commissioner's Office and Ofcom have been notified of the incident, Vodafone added.
