Cyberattack strikes Vigo County

Vigo County, Indiana, was hit with a cyberattack on July 23 and is still in the process of assessing the damage to the government’s computer system.

Vigo officials at first were not certain exactly what type of attack occurred as no ransom note appeared, said information technology department director Jeremy Snowden to WTHR News. However, a county administrator stated on July 24 that ransomware was the culprit.

The county’s IT personnel, working with an outside cybersecurity firm, was able to limit the scope of the attack to the courthouse and government center, reported WTHI News.

Vigo has cyber insurance so it is not expecting the attack to generate any extra expenses, and county leaders expect their systems to be fully operational in a short period of time.

Vigo County contains the city of Terre Haute, but there are no reports of its computer systems being impacted by the attack.
