FBI Warns of Attacks on Anonymous FTP Servers to Steal Health Records

By Marcos Colon

Medical and dental organizations should be on high alert as attackers are targeting anonymous FPT servers in search for sensitive medical records.

The FBI has issued a warning to healthcare organizations as cybercriminals aim to compromise protected health information (PHI) stored on these servers to ultimately benefit off the sensitive data.

“In general, any misconfigured or unsecured server operating on a business network on which sensitive data is stored or processed exposes the business to data theft and compromise by cybercriminals who can use the data for purposes such as blackmail, identity theft, or financial fraud,” the warning reads.

Healthcare businesses are urged to check for any FTP servers running in anonymous mode, and ensure that no sensitive information is stored on those servers.
