Florida emergency site hacked during Alberto

As Tropical Storm Alberto was crashing into Florida's coast, a malicious attacker briefly hijacked the state's Division of Emergency Management website Tuesday, replacing the home page with a different page.

Network technicians restored the site – https://www.floridadisaster.org - after about 20 minutes, according to published reports. Officials did not say what appeared on the site in place of the regular home page, but said it was not pornographic.

Officials were looking into how the hacker gained access to the site – an initial examination did not reveal any inherent weaknesses – but work is under way to better secure the site, published reports said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement Computer Crime Center is investigating. Agency officials could not be reached for comment today.

The website used by emergency management officials was not affected by the attacks.
