Netscaler swallowed by Citrix in $300m swoop

Citrix has acquired application acceleration company Netscaler in a deal valued at over $300 million.

As part of the deal, the infrastructure access firm will purchase $23 million unvested stock options. Proceedings will be finalised in the Autumn subject to the usual shareholder and regulatory approvals.

Netscaler, based in San Jose, California, currently estimates that around 75 percent of all internet users go through its systems each day.

"The acquisition means we are the only company that can offer end users a complete system for application delivery management," said Wes Wasson, vice president of worldwide marketing at Netscaler. "Netscaler will be able to bring its expertise in application acceleration to Citrix customers."

Also revealed today were details of McAfee's acquisition of Wireless Security. The wireless company's security solutions will be embedded within McAfee packages, including Internet Security Suite, VirusScan and Personal Firewall.

Under the terms of the agreement McAfee has acquired all of Wireless Security's outstanding stock, including all technology and assets.

It has been a year of consolidation in the infosec industry. As reported by SC Magazine in April, Norwegian computer forensics company Ibas purchased its nearest competitor Vogon, in a deal worth $17 million.
