Personal info of every Ohio state employee – including the governor – stolen from intern’s car

Where did the breach take place? The state of Ohio.

Who are the victims? All 64,467 state workers.

What kind of personal information? Names and Social Security numbers.

What happened? A backup computer storage tape was stolen from a state intern's unlocked vehicle, violating policy.

What was the response? All workers are being notified via email and regular email, and the state has set up an information hotline. Also, the state is planning to provide a free year of identity theft insurance. The state Highway Patrol is investigating.

Details: Thieves trying to access the data would need sophisticated expertise and equipment, and it appears the tape was not targeted for theft as other cars in the apartment complex where the intern - earning $10.50 per hour - also were broken into.

Quote: "We have no reason to believe there's any breach of security at this time, and we think it is unlikely that a breach will occur." - Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, whose information was also compromised
