Personal information of University of Toledo students and staff at risk following computer thefts

What happened? The personal information of students and staff at the University of Toledo is believed to be at risk after two hard drives were reported stolen from the school’s Health and Human Services Building.

What types of personal information? The hard drives likely contain the names Social Security numbers and grade changes. The number of potential victims was not disclosed.

Details: Secretary Jeanette Espinosa’s computer was stolen on June 18 and Associate Professor Thomas Tatchell’s computer was reported stolen on July 12.

Espinosa’s PC was snatched between June 15 and June 18, while Tatchell’s was stolen between May 2 and July 12.

What was the response? People associated with the university were advised to lock officer doors, use strong passwords and store data on a secure server.

The university’s police department is investigating the thefts.

Quote: “We believe the risk is minimal,” said Lynn Hunt, the university’s compliance and privacy officer, in a letter to students.
